Because the exam question that I have chosen is "Closely observing", my theme is about observing the various colours of butterflies closely (wing colours, patterns, textures etc.) So when I started looking for artists my main focus was expressive/abstract artists, or any artists generally relevant to insects or butterflies.
Michael Cina
I discovered an artist called Michael Cina who creates very expressive and abstract paintings as well as collages. He focuses his work on shape, color, composition and mood, which makes his work very unique and personal. I find his style and technique quite interesting, I like the fact that the majority of his work does not concentrate on specific detail and that the work is just expressive and messy, for instance there are no precise neat lines etc.
I will definitely look more into his style and techniques, and I will carry out experiments to see how the use and combination of colours can create beautiful details, that could express the colours of butterflies.

Rebecca J Coles
During my research I have also found the work of Rebecca J Coles. She is a paper artist who creates butterfly assemblages out of media that she recycles e.g. magazines. I really like her work, because even though she uses paper, she thinks about the composition and each individual colours of the butterflies, placing and pining them down effectively, to represent gradual colour change and the illusion that the butterflies are floating/flying in the air.
I am quite interested of representing my close butterfly colour observations in this way, I need to be aware of the time I will have when creating my final piece. Although her work i really nice, I feel like it is too plain, and that there may be some texture or extra detail needed on the canvas. However this is not a problem, as hopefully when i begin experimenting in her style as well as other artist styles, I will discover ways how to add that texture etc.

Rikka Ayasaki
Another artist that I have found, who creates abstract painting with expressive colours is a French artist named Rikka Ayasaki.
She uses acrylic or oil paint on canvas, and through blending the colours together she creates amazing paintings of landscapes, as for instance in her painting bellow, where she has painted a sunset. The reason I am so interested in her work is because although it is somewhat clear of what her subject mater is, or what she is painting, her work is still slightly unclear and bury leaving for the viewers eyes to decided what they are seeing in front of them. Even though she does not really use lines or shapes, the right use of colours and tones allows her paintings to appear like the e.g. sunset and sea. It would be very interesting to try and combine her techniques and style with my butterfly theme, as her style would allow me to focus on the colours of butterflies in a very detailed way.
